Storing a Project and Other Things ....

January 31, 2012

The end of the month is upon us!  Wow, I can not believe January is just about over.  I don't know where all of my readers live, but here in north Iowa, the winter has been pretty mild compared to last year.  At this time last year, we had over 2 feet of snow on the ground and relentless below 0 temps for days on end.  Right now as I write, it's 43 degrees and possibly heading into the 50s today!  I'll take it!

The mild weather has me thinking about spring cleaning.... which leads me to think about regular household items that can be used in our sewing rooms.  I don't like to toss something I feel can be used in an unconventional way.  This saves it from going to the landfills and helps us organize at the same time!  Feel free to share some of the everyday things you use in your sewing space.  I love to hear new ideas!  So here are a few of mine ....

To store a project in progress, I use those zippered bags that sheet sets come in.  I've saved about a dozen of them.  When I have a project all cut out, I place the pieces in that zippered bag with t he pattern or book with the instructions and then I'm ready to take it with me to my retreat!  No pieces lost!

To store my finished samples in my small closet in the room I use for my studio, I use skirt hangers purchased at any store like Target or Wal-Mart.  This makes it easy for me to look for the particular sample I need to send to a quilt shop.  I also store tops waiting to be quilted on these hangers.  I have a larger storage bar in my basement with all my samples (smaller than lap quilts) hung that way.

I know we are all always looking for ways to store our scissors and rotary blades close to our cutting table.  I re-purposed this coffee mug stand (since the mugs are stored in a cupboard) into a scissor/rotary cutter holder.  That way, these items are right by the cutting mat, not just tossed on top of the table.  I also have a peg board fastened to the wall (you can see a bit of it in this photo) to hang all my rulers.  Once again, easy to reach!

So, those are just of few of the many regular household items around my house that I use in my sewing room.  Please share some of your ideas!

Happy Quilting!
