Housework or Quilting?
That was my dilema this weekend. I started out vacuuming and cleaning floors. As I approached my sewing room, I knew I was in trouble!
I caught a glimpse of my Slyvia's Bridal Sampler quilt blocks that are supposed to be assembled into a top by month's end and taken to our "completion" party. Mind you, out of a 100+ blocks that were supposed to be completed taking this class, I only got 40 done. So, I started laying out the blocks to come up with a setting. I decided to use 36 of the blocks I liked the most, set on point with solid brown and tan blocks in between. I plan on adding a thin blue border then a larger brown outer border with room enough for some applique (of course!).
Here is the beginnings of the lay out:

Well now, of course, since I had it laid out, I just had to start sewing! Here is a photo of the rows starting to be pieced diagonally. I moved some of the blocks around from the original layout.

So, here I sit Sunday evening, still playing around with the quilt top. I did manage to do all the laundry and go grocery shopping, so the weekend wasn't a total loss!
Have any of you tried Sylvia's Bridal? I recommend it for a fun, and sometimes challenging, pasttime. Doing these blocks has made me push myself to use techniques I either have never used or tried to avoid in the past. There are blocks that use y-seams, curves, paper-piecing and applique as well as just pieced blocks. I found that some of these techniques weren't quite as scary as I thought .... and then there were some I feel I will still avoid when I can (...cough, cough... "y-seams" .... cough ....).
So, hopefully, I will have the top finished and the applique done before our "unveiling" get together. Luckily, they don't have to be quilted by the end of the month!
The moral to this post is .... stretch your skills sometimes and try a new technique. You may find you actually like it! And .... housework will always be there when you get back to it!
Happy Quilting!
